Inspect a worked screenplay conversion

Compare an original Final Draft file with its converted Fountain, plain text, and formatted pages before using your own draft.

  • Open the worked example on the screenplay converter to read the original FDX, converted Fountain, and plain-text output.
  • Download Original FDX, Converted Fountain, or Converted plain text to inspect the files yourself.
  • See the formatted pages, compare scene numbers and overlapping dialogue, and check which production details stay in the original FDX.

Reuse your directions and keep writing with Enter

As you type a parenthetical, Plot suggests directions you have already written in the script, and one Enter now completes any suggestion and starts the next line.

  • Choose a matching direction with ↑ and ↓, then press → or tap it on a touch screen to fill it and stay on the line.
  • Directions you use most appear first, with recent occurrences breaking ties. Your casing, names, and parentheses stay as written.
  • Press Enter on any suggestion to fill it and start the next line: dialogue after a cue, cue extension, or parenthetical; action after a scene heading or transition. Undo reverses both together.
  • When two characters trade lines, a new character cue suggests who replies. Press Enter to accept it and start their dialogue, or type another name.
  • Press Enter on a bold or italic all-caps name to make it a character cue and start plain dialogue beneath it.
  • Turn Writing suggestions on or off under Settings → Editor → Script intelligence.

Character cues across languages

Plot recognizes uppercase character names such as ŁUCJA, ÉLODIE, ΑΝΝΑ, and ДМИТРИЙ when you write or import a Fountain script.

  • Character suggestions, the cast list, and continuity checks follow the same names through your script.
  • Fountain imports preserve dialogue under these cues and recognize translated title-page labels.
PlotDans l’appDisponibleAmélioration

Shared scripts follow your page formatting

Readers opening your share link see dialogue, character cues, and parentheticals formatted as they are in your editor.

  • Dialogue is single-spaced, character cues sit over their speeches, and parentheticals retain their placement and interior parentheses.
  • Simultaneous dialogue reads side by side.

Templates, guides, and tools in your language

Choose German, Spanish, French, Japanese, or Korean for templates, writing guides, character profiles, table-read and rehearsal tools, Fountain checks, and outline exports.

  • Download a screenplay starter or worksheet in the language you chose on its template page.
  • Follow step-by-step guides for importing a script, making save points, and exporting a PDF in your language.
  • Validate Fountain text or extract a screenplay outline with translated controls and results.
  • Develop a character with native prompts and examples, then copy or download your profile as Markdown. Choose Keep this profile to continue this tab after a draft conflict.
  • Plan a table read and build rehearsal sides with translated samples, run sheets, and cue practice. Japanese drafts are now timed by their actual words.
  • Compare writing tools in Alternatives, follow workflows in Learn, and find support through Contact in the same language.

Work on a passage with your browser's agent

A browser agent that supports native WebMCP tools can read the open document, select a passage, and replace selected text in the Inkwell editor.

  • Open the document and ask a compatible browser agent to work with the passage you choose.
  • Selections appear in the editor, and text replacements use the editor's normal undo.
  • Use the browser's agent controls to choose and run its tools.

Turn character notes into choices in scenes

Build a character profile around goals, relationships, and a defining choice, then copy or download your worksheet as Markdown.

  • Start blank or explore a worked example to connect a character's beliefs and behavior to the pressure they face.
  • Trace an opening action through a defining choice, its consequences, and the next scene to write.
  • Fill the prompts in the free character profile builder, or download the blank worksheet and example together as a Markdown template.

Choose your page style and writing focus

Choose an eye-friendly or traditional screenplay page, dim around your sentence, paragraph, or scene, and keep the line you're writing at a comfortable height.

  • Choose Eye-friendly or Traditional under Page style, or adjust element colors, page tone, and heading and cue emphasis yourself.
  • Use Dim around the caret to focus on a sentence, paragraph, or scene.
  • Set Typewriter scroll to Top, Middle, or Bottom, and highlight the current line under Settings → Editor.
  • Reuse a familiar location and time with one scene-heading suggestion, and choose whether writing suggestions and remembered headings appear in Settings → Editor → Script intelligence.

  • The fast Claude tier and Haiku selection now resolve to Claude Haiku 5.5.
  • The picker names the model serving each tier and compares its standard token rates with that provider’s fast tier.

Issued pages and production distribution packets

Keep production page numbers stable as the script changes, preserve inserted A-pages, and download a packet that displays the revised pages.

  • Lock the White production draft, then issue colored revisions from History. Inserted material uses A-pages while the office's existing page numbers stay in place.
  • Full production PDFs retain issued numbering and list distributed revisions on the title page. A pass with changes prints the color and date on every script page, with asterisks beside revised lines.
  • Choose the current revision's distribution packet in Import / Export or the command palette. It displays the affected pages, but the PDF file retains the full manuscript; use it for recipients who may read the whole script.
  • Review the PDF against the last issued copy when Plot warns that an older page lock was reconstructed or the page measurements changed.

Screenplay page measurements, on screen and in PDF

Plot uses 3.5-inch dialogue and 2.5-inch parenthetical columns for page counts and PDF output. The formatting reference now shows the page's measurements and a scale drawing.

  • Dialogue and parentheticals wrap to the same column widths in PDF output, page estimates, script breakdowns, and the screenplay converter preview.
  • An existing script can have a different page count when you export it again. Check the new PDF before sending it to readers or issuing production pages.
  • Open the screenplay formatting reference for page dimensions, margins, element widths, and the scale drawing.

Answer Agent Mode with a number, a scale, or your go-ahead

When Agent Mode pauses to ask you something, it can now ask for an exact number or a point on a scale, and some questions let you hand the choice back with Use your judgment.

  • A number question shows its range and step, and a scale question labels both ends. If the agent suggests a value, it is used only when you choose it.
  • Where it is offered, Use your judgment lets the agent settle a preference for you. You can still leave any question open.
  • Answers you have started stay in place when you switch sidebar tabs and come back, and the question controls appear in your Inkwell language.

Export Central European screenplays to PDF

Screenplays in Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish or Romanian now export to PDF instead of stopping on letters like ł, ř, ő, ş and ș.

  • The PDF keeps the same page layout and page count. A script that exported before exports exactly as it did.
  • On screen, those letters stay in the screenplay font instead of switching to another typewriter face mid-word.

Character suggestions that follow the scene

When you type a character cue, Plot now suggests the characters already in the scene first, and you can pick a suggestion with the keyboard, the mouse, or a tap.

  • Suggestions put characters in the current scene first, then whoever spoke last, then the characters who speak most. Every matching name is still in the list.
  • Press ↑ and ↓ to choose, Enter or → to accept, or tap a suggestion on a touch screen. Your choice stays highlighted as you keep typing, and the list stays on screen beside the cursor.
  • A parenthetical such as (whispering) now shows one pair of brackets while you type, and saves and exports the same way.

Five focused genre revision passes

Five new Plot skills read your draft for clue logic, suspense, dread, relationship turns, or invented-world rules, and propose focused changes you can accept or reject.

  • Choose Mystery Fair Play, Suspense Pass, Horror Pass, Romance Arc, or World Rules from the Skills tab.
  • Each pass marks its changes on the page: a sharper line, or a short planted beat added near the moment it serves. Accept or reject them one at a time.
  • The report beside them explains each change, names the strengths to keep, and lists what a small edit could not fix. A pass never deletes or moves your text, and it leaves the big decisions, such as who did it or how it ends, to you.

Turn a skill's report into changes you review

A finished report in the Skills tab now has Make these changes, which hands its findings to Agent Mode so the fixes come to your page as changes to accept or reject.

  • Choose Make these changes on a finished report. The run works like any Agent Mode run: it can ask you a question in Chat, and its changes come to your page for review. Show the run takes you to it.
  • If the agent is already working on a run, this one waits and starts when that run finishes. You can cancel it while it waits.
  • When the run finishes, its card shows how many of the report's findings it acted on and lists the ones still open.
  • Edits a pass already proposed stay in the Skills tab's review, and the run leaves those lines to it. A report with nothing to change, such as one that found only strengths, says so where the button would be.

Agent Mode and help answers start from the best match

Agent Mode now gets a suggestion for the skill that fits your request before each step, and the Dramaturg ranks the help articles it finds by how well they answer your question.

  • Before each step of a run, Agent Mode checks your request against every skill you have access to and is pointed at the one that fits, so it can go straight to that pass.
  • The suggestion is only a pointer. Agent Mode can still use any skill you have, or none, and when no skill is a clear fit it carries on exactly as before.
  • When you ask the Dramaturg how something in Inkwell works, it now puts the article that best answers your question first, so its answer and its links start there.

Revision exercises in the screenplay guides

The dialogue, pacing and length guides now include exercises to try on your own draft and figures from produced screenplays, and a new exercise shows what moving a scene does to the story.

  • Scene-order exercise: reorder seven scene cards, see which setups the new order leaves missing, and download a repair checklist to take into your own revision.
  • Dialogue guide: pick a speech length and see what share of turns and words run longer, then compare how counting words, paragraphs or lines changes a dialogue percentage.
  • Pacing guide: rearrange scene lengths to compare two orders, and note what changes at each cut in location, time, viewpoint and immediate goal. What you type stays on the page.
  • All three guides now show how produced screenplays compare, overall and by genre, so you can see where your draft sits.

A second corpus on the dialogue research page

The dialogue research page now adds the Cornell Movie-Dialogs Corpus: 617 films whose median line of dialogue is seven words, the same as the screenplay corpus the page already measured.

  • Compare dialogue share by where a character sits in the credits and by the credited gender of speakers.

A setup guide on your projects page

Once you have a project, your projects page lists your first steps in Inkwell during your first month: create a project, write your first words, make a save point, and, once you have a Plot project, try AI assistance. Each step takes you to the control that does it.

  • Steps tick themselves off as you do them, whether you start from the guide or not.
  • The writing, save point, and AI steps open your most recent project with the right control ready: the page for writing, the save dialog for a save point, or the AI composer in a Plot project. Nothing runs until you choose to.

  • Ask what a character says across the draft — it can look up those lines and the scenes they belong to.
  • Ask which scenes are at a location — it can look up the sluglines that belong there.

Say what you want and Auto works out how to answer

The companion opens in Auto now: ask a question and you get an answer, ask for a change and it writes one and brings it back for you to review. You stop picking a mode before you type, your screenplay reads as a screenplay in the thread, and the review opens itself when a run finishes.

  • Auto is where the composer starts. Ask for a rewrite or ask a question in the same box, and the model works out which one you meant.
  • Changes come back marked up on the draft you are already writing on, and the review opens itself when a run finishes — there is nothing to click first.
  • Type while a run is working. Your message waits above the composer and goes next; press Send again to interrupt the run and steer it with that message instead.
  • Screenplay in the thread reads as screenplay — sluglines, character cues and dialogue, not a wall of chat text.
  • Pick a mode when you want to be specific: Ask never touches the script, Plan proposes an approach before it changes anything, and Agent goes straight to work.
  • Live controls stay beside the composer while a run works, an unsent draft survives, and earlier results stay reachable in the same conversation.

Turn ghost text off

Ghost text as you type is now a switch, in Settings and in the editor sidebar. Turning it off leaves inline edits and skills exactly where they were.

  • Switch ghost text off in Settings under Editor, or from the settings panel in the editor sidebar — whichever you have open.
  • This switch covers the suggestions that appear as you type. Inline edits and the skills you run keep working.
  • It applies at once: ghost text already on screen clears the moment you turn it off.
  • The choice persists across reloads and follows you to your other open tabs.

One menu for every command

Cmd+K anywhere, or a slash in the editor, now opens the same menu over the same list — navigation, settings, exports, editor commands and every AI skill — led by the commands you ran last.

  • Cmd+K from anywhere and slash in the editor open the same menu, so there is one place to look and one list to learn.
  • What you ran recently sits at the top, so the commands you use most stop being the ones you hunt for.
  • Type what you want to do and the closest matches rise — you do not have to remember what we called it.
  • Skills say what comes back before you run them: proposed edits, a report, or both.
  • A command that is not available right now tells you why, instead of leaving you guessing.

Agent Mode decides its own next step

Give Agent Mode a direction and it works the draft the way you would: read a scene, make the change, read the result, decide what to do next. When it finishes, most of what it did comes back as changes you review one at a time.

  • Describe the outcome you want and let the agent choose the passes, instead of picking the skills yourself up front.
  • It reads the draft as it goes, so a change it makes early informs the one it makes next.
  • Name a scene or an act in your direction and it aims its passes there.
  • The run works on its own draft line and your script is untouched while it does. Its changes then come back to you where you are writing, marked up in place to accept or reject one at a time — a moved scene or a formatting-only tweak you take or leave with the run instead.
  • Pause a run, read what it has done so far, and pick it up or stop it.

Getting represented, without the guesswork

Guides on what agents and managers each actually do, how to find who is repping now, how to write a query, and what to bring to the meeting — plus a private planner that keeps your target list and drafts in your browser.

  • Read the difference between an agent and a manager before you spend a month querying the wrong one.
  • Find current representation through the guild directories the guilds themselves keep up to date.
  • Draft a query and a meeting brief in the planner, and keep a red flag beside the name it belongs to.
  • The planner saves only when you press Save, and it saves in your browser — no names, loglines or queries reach us.
  • Every source card shows the day our editors last opened it.

Character names that fit the decade

A free name desk for period work. Give it a story year and an age, or a birth decade, and it rolls given names people were actually being called when your character was born.

  • Place a name by story year plus age, by birth decade, or by period, and the desk works out which records to pull from.
  • Filter by gender, popularity, first letter and an avoid list. Shuffle, lock the ones you want to keep, and reroll the rest.
  • Check a name you have already drafted and it tells you whether that name belongs in that decade.
  • Names come from the US national birth records from 1880 on, and from curated period lists before that — the desk says which, and where the records run out.
  • It runs in your browser. Your cast list is not sent anywhere.

What screenwriting actually pays

A free desk on screenwriter pay: the 2026 WGA minimums by contract family and writing step, what residuals add on top, and how the floors sit against published earnings for writers generally.

  • Look up a Guild floor by contract family, writing step and year, for feature and television work.
  • See what residuals add, with High-Budget SVOD shown as the three-year total it is rather than a floor.
  • Read the floors next to published earnings for writers generally, so a minimum is not mistaken for a salary.
  • The explorer is a tool in its own right, and the family, step and year you pick live in the link — send someone the exact readout.
  • Every figure names where it came from, and what you type stays in your browser.

Faster everyday writing in Plot

Typing, ghost text, hidden sidebars, and returning to the project library now do less repeated work on the paths writers use every day.

  • Typing stays smoother in longer drafts, with less delay between a keystroke and the updated page.
  • Ghost text can appear sooner, and hidden sidebars stop competing with the draft until you open them again.
  • Returning to the project library gets the useful project list in front of you sooner, with totals filled in without holding up the screen.

Free screenplay format converter

Open a Final Draft .fdx or a Fountain draft in your browser, read it as real screenplay pages, and take it out as a PDF, Fountain, or plain text. Parsing and the PDF both happen on your machine.

  • Pages are laid out in industry format — Courier 12pt, the 1.5-inch binding margin, scene numbers in the margins — using the same page-break calculator as Inkwell's own PDF export, so the page count is the page count.
  • The PDF comes from your browser's print dialog rather than a server, which is why no draft is uploaded and nothing is retained.
  • Every conversion reports what it costs in that specific file: which elements come across unchanged, which arrive as action, and what production state stays in Final Draft.
  • Fountain scene-number syntax no longer prints inside the slugline in exported PDFs — it is drawn in the margin, where a shooting script puts it.

Screenplay pacing desk and pacing map

Page count says how long a draft is; pacing is how that length is distributed. A new desk publishes what published practice looks like across the screenplay clock, and a browser-private map places one draft on the same distributions.

  • Measured action share, scene density, and speaking-cast arrival across ten equal stretches of a screenplay, with the middle half of published practice shaded behind each curve and every value listed in a table beneath it.
  • Pacing map parses Fountain or Final Draft in the browser and draws the draft's own curves over the corpus band, plus a scene-length ribbon and percentile placement for eight whole-draft measures.
  • Reports position, never a grade: it does not detect an inciting incident, an act break, or a midpoint, and it states when a draft is outside the population it is being compared to.

Reviewable AI writing controls in Plot

Bring the right part of a screenplay into an AI conversation, compare inline alternatives or skill-generated takes, and review proposed writing changes in the editor before they join the draft.

  • Mention a scene or act in Ask so the conversation starts with the context you chose.
  • Compare inline-edit alternatives in place, or generate skill passes as separate takes without overwriting the working draft.
  • Open proposed changes as reviewable editor hunks, keep or reject each one, and incorporate the result only when it is ready.

Screenplay length desk and private checker

See how screenplay length varies by format and genre, then place a laid-out PDF page count against those ranges with optional Final Draft story context in the browser.

  • The research desk separates format conventions from measured screenplay-length distributions instead of presenting one universal target.
  • Enter the page count from a laid-out PDF; an optional Final Draft file stays local and adds story-word and scene-count context, not pagination.
  • Results describe the draft and its comparison range; they do not grade the story or upload its text.

Free script breakdown tool

Break down a Fountain or Final Draft screenplay privately in the browser — scene sheets, eighths, cast, locations, and exportable CSVs — then read how the inventory differs from coverage.

  • Private first-pass ledger from Fountain or FDX: scenes, eighths, cast, locations, and day/night.
  • Interactive stripboard plus CSV exports; the screenplay never leaves the browser.
  • Learn guide and glossary now point at the same production inventory Plot uses for reports.

Private screenplay review and submission tools

Inspect a Final Draft file, compare two screenplay drafts, check a submission PDF, and explore screenplay structure without uploading the script.

  • FDX Inspector shows the document structure and production data inside a Final Draft file before a move or cleanup.
  • Screenplay Diff compares two drafts by scene and text while keeping both files in the browser.
  • The Submission Center pairs current opportunity profiles with a browser-local PDF preflight, and the Screenplay Anatomy Atlas publishes aggregate structural patterns from 2,077 screenplays.

Copy and paste that keeps the formatting

Move scenes between drafts and the elements arrive as elements. A character cue stays a character cue, dialogue stays dialogue, and the whole paste undoes in one step.

  • Copy a run of scenes from one draft and paste it into another with the element types intact.
  • Paste plain text and Inkwell recovers the structure when the text has it — scene headings, cues, and dialogue arrive as those elements. Prose without those markers comes in as action.
  • Rich text from a word processor arrives as action, ready to promote with Tab.
  • Cmd+Shift+V still pastes as plain text when that is what you want, and any paste undoes as a single step.
