> The IDE for writers — AI-native screenwriting and document tooling built on version control, structured data, and agentic AI skills.

Inkwell treats a document as structured data rather than a page of text. That foundation is what makes version control (named, immutable save points and branching draft lines), semantic scene- and dialogue-level change tracking, and AI skills that propose reviewable edits inside the draft possible. Two products share the platform: Plot for screenwriting and Canvas for long-form documents.

## Product facts
- [Products](https://www.inkwell.software/features): Plot is the screenwriter's IDE. Canvas brings the same version control, collaboration, and agentic AI foundation to long-form work.
- [Plot import formats](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/interop): Final Draft FDX and Fountain.
- [Plot export formats](https://www.inkwell.software/pricing): PDF and Fountain on every plan; Final Draft FDX on Writer and above. Production PDF workflows are on Pro and above.
- [Version workflow](https://www.inkwell.software/learn/version-control-for-screenwriters): Save points name restorable moments, draft lines hold alternate versions, and semantic changes compare scenes and dialogue instead of raw file characters.
- [Collaboration](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/collaboration): Pro supports collaboration with up to five people across a writer's projects. Team adds room-scale real-time collaboration, shared workspaces, and role-based permissions.
- [AI review behavior](https://www.inkwell.software/skills): Skills propose changes inside the draft, and writers accept or skip each one. Agent Mode orchestrates complex, multi-step revisions as one cohesive change set; takes isolate scene-level experiments.
- [Incorporate behavior](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/incorporate-changes): Incorporate previews a whole-document change set and applies it after confirmation. For a focused scene experiment, use a take or Agent Mode.
- [Plans](https://www.inkwell.software/pricing): Free, Writer, Pro, and Team are the self-serve plans, with sales-assisted Enterprise available for organizations. Free includes two screenplay projects, recent version history, 20 AI skill passes a month, and PDF and Fountain export.

## Products
- [Plot](https://www.inkwell.software/plot): The screenwriter's IDE — a structured screenplay editor with agentic AI for complex revisions, reviewable skill passes, draft lines for alternate versions, and production workflows. Imports and exports FDX and Fountain, and exports industry-formatted PDF.
- [Canvas](https://www.inkwell.software/canvas): A block-based document editor with version control, AI skills, and lossless markdown round-trip, for novelists, researchers, and technical writers.

- [Screenplay dialogue & speaking-cast research](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-dialogue): Original aggregate analysis of 994 parsed IMSDb scripts. Measures dialogue-turn concentration, raw versus effective speaking-cast size, dialogue-scene composition, turn length, and adjacent-speaker topology. Publishes aggregate data and method only — no screenplay text, titles, character names, identifiers, or title-level measurements.
- [Screenplay dialogue & cast balance tool](https://www.inkwell.software/tools/dialogue-balance): Private browser analysis for Fountain and Final Draft. Measures speaking-character concentration and scene mix against the published dialogue corpus; does not grade dialogue or infer character importance.
- [Screenplay Anatomy Atlas](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-anatomy): Original aggregate analysis of 2,077 structured screenplays, with empirical distributions for action, scene rhythm, cast arrival, dialogue concentration, and summary compression.
- [How long should a screenplay be](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-length): Reader bands, official contest windows, and a private FDX-forward page-count checker that uses MovieSum story words as a planning proxy — not as a measured page count.
- [Screenplay pacing](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-pacing): How a draft distributes its length rather than how long it is — measured action share, scene density, and speaking-cast arrival across ten equal stretches of 2,077 screenplays, plus a browser-private pacing map that places one draft on the same distributions. Measures shape; does not detect beats.

## Guides
- [Import a Final Draft screenplay](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/import-fdx): Bring a Final Draft (.fdx) script into Inkwell Plot — scene headings, character cues, and dialogue carry over through the editor Import / Export menu.
- [Create your first save point](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point): Name a snapshot of your screenplay in Plot — table read, workshop notes, or before the rewrite — then compare or restore from version history.
- [Run a dialogue pass](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/dialogue-pass): Use Inkwell's Dialogue pass skill to tighten lines in your screenplay — suggestions appear inline in the draft for you to accept or reject, not in a chat panel.
- [Incorporate a winning draft line](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/incorporate-changes): Land the draft line that won onto the line you keep, keep the incorporate save point, and use a take or Agent Mode when the work is one scene.
- [Connect your AI provider (BYOK)](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/byok-setup): Bring your own API key so Inkwell skill passes run against your provider account — transparent usage, no opaque bundled routing.
- [Co-write in a writers' room](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/collaboration): Invite collaborators to the same Plot project, see presence in the editor, and keep named save points when notes get heavy.
- [Export a submission-ready PDF](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/export-pdf): Export industry-formatted PDF pages from Plot — the same Import / Export menu used for FDX and Fountain round-trip.
- [Writers' room workflow in Plot](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/writers-room-workflow): Break story, assign scenes, and track parallel takes — save points and draft lines replace the folder of _FINAL_v4 files.

## Screenplay formatting situations
- [Phone calls & intercut](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/phone-calls-and-intercut): Establish what the audience sees and hears, then use clear scene headings or an INTERCUT instruction so a phone conversation stays easy to picture.
- [V.O. vs O.S.](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/voice-over-versus-off-screen): Use O.S. for a speaker who belongs to the current scene but is outside the frame; use V.O. when the voice comes from outside the scene's immediate physical action.
- [Text messages](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/text-messages): Put readable on-screen messages in action, identify the sender when needed, and use one consistent pattern instead of disguising silent text as spoken dialogue.
- [Montage](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/montage-sequences): Signal the montage, organize its visual beats in action, and end it clearly when the reader might not otherwise know where ordinary scene flow resumes.
- [Flashbacks](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/flashback-sequences): Make the time shift explicit in a scene heading or action cue, then clearly return to the present when the transition could otherwise be missed.
- [Title pages & anonymity](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/title-pages-anonymous-submissions): Keep a normal master title page with authorship and contact information, but create a separate anonymous PDF whenever the current submission rules require it.
- [Scene numbers & production](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/scene-numbers-production-drafts): Leave scene numbers out of an ordinary spec unless requested; add and preserve them when a production needs stable references for breakdowns, schedules, and revisions.
- [Dual & overlapping dialogue](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/dual-dialogue-and-overlapping-dialogue): Use side-by-side dialogue only when two speeches are genuinely simultaneous; use interruptions, dashes, or action beats when the timing is sequential.
- [Foreign language & subtitles](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/foreign-language-dialogue-and-subtitles): Tell the reader what language is spoken and whether the audience understands it, then write the readable translation without repeating the instruction on every line.
- [Inserts, screens & written material](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/inserts-screens-and-written-material): Put the exact words the audience must read in action, and use an INSERT only when the change in visual emphasis is itself important.
- [Continuous action & time jumps](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/continuous-action-and-time-jumps): Use CONTINUOUS for unbroken movement into a new location, SAME for simultaneous time, and a plain action beat or new time label for an actual jump forward.
- [Cold opens, acts & tags](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting/episodic-act-structure): Match the target show's current template: some episodic scripts label every commercial act, while many streaming specs use feature-style flow without printed breaks.

## Screenplay submission opportunities
- [Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/submissions/academy-nicholl-fellowships): The current Nicholl pathway uses public submission partners rather than the former direct-entry competition. The 2026–2027 Black List and Writers Guild Foundation windows are closed.
- [The Black List programs and labs](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/submissions/black-list-programs-and-labs): Black List hosting, paid evaluation, and opportunity opt-ins are separate decisions. Each named program adds its own eligibility, materials, and deadline.
- [Sundance Institute Development Track](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/submissions/sundance-development-track): Sundance's Development Track begins with an application packet and the first five screenplay pages, not a full-script upload. The 2027 application is closed.
- [Austin Film Festival Script Competition](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/submissions/austin-film-festival-script-competition): AFF's categories reached capacity before the 2026 late deadline. The reviewed rules require a blind-read PDF under 5 MB and category-specific lengths.

## AI skills
- [Dialogue pass (/dialogue-pass)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/dialogue-pass): Refine every line in a character's voice — accept or reject each rewrite.
- [Save lines (/save-lines)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/save-lines): An economy-of-language pass — tighten without losing meaning, and see the pages you save.
- [Continuity check (/continuity-check)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/continuity-check): Find every inconsistency before a reader does — timeline, props, wardrobe, injuries, knowledge.
- [Coverage (/coverage)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/coverage): Industry-style script coverage — see your script the way a professional reader will, first.
- [Tone pass (/tone-pass)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/tone-pass): Map your script's emotional arc scene by scene and catch the tonal breaks.
- [Organize notes (/organize)](https://www.inkwell.software/skills/organize): Route scattered margin notes to their proper places in the draft.

## Blog
- [How long is a line of screenplay dialogue?](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/how-long-is-a-line-of-screenplay-dialogue): Across 994 parsed scripts, the median per-script dialogue turn is seven words, while the median per-script 90th-percentile turn is twenty-four. Those are reference points for rhythm, not line-length rules.
- [The cast is smaller than it looks](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/the-cast-is-smaller-than-it-looks): Raw cast size counts names. Speaking load shows how many of those names actually carry the conversation — and the gap gets much wider as casts grow.
- [Two drafts, same page count](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/two-drafts-same-page-count): Page count is one number. Pacing is where that number goes. Measured across thousands of features, screenplays do not pace evenly — and the middle is not supposed to look like the open.
- [Page count is a reader signal, not a stopwatch](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/page-count-is-a-reader-signal): A 105-page feature is not a 105-minute movie. It is a cold-read estimate. Treat the number as a signal, then check it against practice.
- [How to choose a Final Draft alternative](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/how-to-choose-a-final-draft-alternative): Name the job. Stay if versions are not the pain. Import if they are.
- [What a script breakdown actually inventories](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/what-a-script-breakdown-actually-inventories): Coverage judges the read. A breakdown tags the shoot. The useful first pass is an inventory, not a score.
- [Markdown round-trip is not an afterthought](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/markdown-round-trip-export-is-not-an-afterthought): Why Canvas bets on lossless markdown instead of locking prose in a proprietary graph.
- [Series bibles belong in Plot, not Canvas](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/series-bibles-belong-in-plot): Plot for the room’s bible. Canvas for Notion/Docs-shaped knowledge around the show.
- [Bring your own key, or let Inkwell carry the bill](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/bring-your-own-key-or-bundled): Bundled, Anthropic, or OpenAI — who holds the key, who pays the provider.
- [Which model should I write with?](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/which-model-should-i-write-with): Fast, balanced, frontier — what each tier is for, and what a pass draws.
- [Who each Inkwell product is for](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/who-each-inkwell-product-is-for): Plot for screenplays, Canvas for everything else — and how to tell which one you need.
- [Locked pages, A-pages, and revision colours](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/screenplay-revisions-locked-pages-and-a-pages): A practical guide to taking one structured screenplay from White pages through production handoff.
- [What a dialogue pass actually changes](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/what-a-dialogue-pass-actually-changes): Skills edit nodes, not chat transcripts.
- [Switch from Final Draft without losing reads](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/switching-from-final-draft-without-losing-your-reads): Import once, name every read, export when the room asks — not before.
- [From beta feedback to the next release](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/from-beta-feedback-to-the-next-release): How we prioritize what ships while Plot is young.
- [Skills vs. chat: staying inside the draft](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/skills-vs-chat-staying-inside-the-draft): What changes when AI proposes edits instead of paragraphs in a sidebar.
- [Why we built save points for writers](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/why-we-built-save-points-for-writers): The habit of naming a moment matters more than the button that creates it.

## Changelog
- [Screenplay pacing desk and pacing map](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#screenplay-pacing-desk-and-map): Page count says how long a draft is; pacing is how that length is distributed. A new desk publishes what published practice looks like across the screenplay clock, and a browser-private map places one draft on the same distributions.
- [Free script breakdown tool](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#free-script-breakdown-tool): Break down a Fountain or Final Draft screenplay privately in the browser — scene sheets, eighths, cast, locations, and exportable CSVs — then read how the inventory differs from coverage.
- [Desktop + Apple apps in progress](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#desktop-and-apple-apps-roadmap): Write in the browser today — and we’re building a desktop app for offline writing plus iPhone and iPad apps for the room on the go. Same projects on every surface.
- [Audience guides and Resources hub](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#audience-guides-and-resources-hub): Guides for screenwriters, writers’ rooms, showrunners, novelists, researchers, teams, and classrooms — plus a Resources hub that pulls the library together.
- [Launch AI skills showcase](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#launch-ai-skills-showcase): Meet the launch skills — dialogue pass, Continuity check, coverage, and more — each showing what it reads and what it changes in the draft.
- [Revision colours on Plot (Pro)](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#plot-revision-colours-pro): WGA-style revision colours ship with Plot on the Pro tier — production markup that matches how rooms mark up a draft.
- [Canvas product page and early access](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#canvas-product-page): Canvas — the block document editor for novels, research, and long-form — has a public product page. Early access for Pro and Team; Plot stays the generally available screenplay product.
- [Save points, draft lines, and semantic changes](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#version-control-primitives): Version control is live on Plot: named immutable save points, parallel draft lines, and scene-level change tracking.
- [Core Plot editor and Fountain parser](https://www.inkwell.software/changelog#core-editor-and-fountain): Real-time Fountain structure, industry element types, tab cycling, auto-formatting, and ghost-text suggestions form the Plot editing baseline.
