Local screenplay comparison

What changed between these drafts?

Compare scenes, dialogue, cast footprint, word deltas, and production impact. The built-in rewrite example targets one concrete goal: Give Mara an active choice, make Jonah part of the mystery, and let the choice create the next complication. Both drafts stay in this browser.

What this tool gives you

A rewrite you can inspect before using your own

Load the built-in before/after rewrite, then inspect a moved scene, an added scene, changed dialogue, and word deltas through the same report your own drafts receive.

Character and production impact

Review speaking-character footprint, dialogue-word movement, locations, day/night changes, interior/exterior changes, and scene numbers.

Revision handoff memo

Download a redacted Markdown change memo for a producer, director, or writing partner without including screenplay body text.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add two screenplay drafts

Paste Fountain or choose local Fountain / FDX files in any combination. Both drafts stay in the browser.

  2. 2

    Confirm uncertain scene matches

Review low-confidence alignments and choose the corresponding scene or mark the old scene removed before relying on totals.

  3. 3

    Review and export observable changes

Move between overview, story map, character, and exact-text views, then download a concise handoff memo.

Questions writers ask

Are either of my screenplay drafts uploaded?

No. Fountain and FDX parsing, scene matching, exact-text comparison, and memo generation run locally in your browser.

Can I compare Fountain with Final Draft FDX?

Yes. You can compare Fountain with Fountain, FDX with FDX, or one of each. Both formats normalize through Inkwell's production parsers before scene matching.

How does the tool know which scenes correspond?

It weighs scene numbers, headings, neighboring scenes, opening action, speaking characters, and relative position. Weak matches remain visibly marked for your confirmation instead of being forced.

Does the tool judge whether my revision improved the screenplay?

No. It reports observable facts such as a scene moving, dialogue-word changes, a new location, or a night exterior. It does not claim that pacing, character arcs, or note satisfaction improved.

What appears in the downloadable change memo?

The memo includes counts, scene headings, movement, word deltas, character additions, and production-impact inventory. It intentionally excludes action and dialogue body text.
