How a screenplay distributes its length rather than how much of it there is: scene length, how often scenes turn over, the balance of action to dialogue, and when new voices arrive. Two drafts with the same page count can pace completely differently.
Pacing is the first thing a reader reports and the last thing a writer can see in their own draft. "It drags in the middle" is almost never a note about length -- it is a note about distribution. Cutting pages evenly from a draft with an uneven shape produces a shorter version of the same problem.
Four things carry it, and all four are measurable from the page. Scene length sets how long the reader stays in one place. Scene density sets how often the picture changes. The action-to-dialogue balance sets how much of a stretch sits in action blocks rather than in speech. Cast arrival sets how much the reader is asked to hold at once. Measured across published features, none of these is flat: openings and endings run most action-heavy, the middle runs least so (action still leads there, by a narrower margin), and speaking characters keep arriving well past the first act.
What a measurement cannot do is name a beat. Where the inciting incident sits, whether the midpoint turns, whether a long scene earns its length -- those are readings a person makes. Treat the numbers as a map of where to look, then fix the scene, not the word count.
No. Page count is total length; pacing is how that length is distributed across the draft. A 105-page screenplay with one twelve-page scene and a 105-page screenplay with evenly-cut scenes read nothing alike.
Find the stretch where scene changes thin out and the action share dips below the corpus band, then read those scenes for whether each one turns. What the dialogue is carrying is not something a word ratio can see -- a confrontation and a page of exposition measure alike -- so the reading is yours. The fix is usually in the scene, not in trimming words evenly.
No. Published practice varies widely, and concentration is normal -- the longest tenth of a screenplay's scenes typically carries a large share of the whole draft. The useful question is whether the long scenes are the ones that should be long.
