PUBLIC LIBRARY - DAWN Water pushes along the curb. A row of sandbags stops short of the library's book drop. MARA, carrying work boots by their laces, tests the front door. Locked. Something knocks against the inside of the book drop. She lifts the flap. A plastic lunch box slides into her hands. Inside: a brass key and a photograph of this building, taken from across the street. On the back, in fresh ink: BEFORE THEY OPEN. INT. LIBRARY VESTIBULE - MOMENTS LATER The key fits the side entrance. Mara steps over a soaked delivery slip. JONAH, the night cleaner, blocks the inner door with his cart. JONAH We're closed. MARA Somebody just returned this. She holds up the lunch box. Jonah looks past her, toward the street. JONAH Put it back. MARA You haven't looked inside. JONAH I packed it. A motor starts below them. The vestibule lights flicker. INT. LIBRARY STAIRWELL - CONTINUOUS Mara follows the sound downstairs. Jonah catches the door before it locks behind her. JONAH (quietly) The pump is on the wrong side of the wall. Below them, water climbs the bottom step. Mara threads one boot onto her foot without letting go of the lunch box.
