# Create your first save point

> Name a snapshot of your screenplay in Plot — table read, workshop notes, or before the rewrite — then compare or restore from version history.

About 2 minutes in Plot

## Named moments beat autosave

Save points are immutable snapshots you label — table reads, workshop notes, before the rewrite.

## Follow along in Plot

Each step matches visible UI in the editor.

1. [Open your screenplay in Plot](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-1)

Sign in and open the draft you are working on. Save points attach to a project on a draft line — start from the editor canvas where your scenes live.

_The canvas you save from — not a folder on disk_

2. [Save progress with ⌘S](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-2)

Press ⌘S (Ctrl+S on Windows) to persist your current draft to the project. Use this while writing; named save points build on the same history.

_Progress saved without leaving the draft_

3. [Create a named save point](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-3)

Press ⌘⇧S or open the command palette and choose Save point with label. Named save points are how you mark meaningful moments — not generic autosave timestamps.

_Keyboard-first — same shortcut registry as the app_

4. [Label the moment](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-4)

Enter a human-readable name: Table read — Act 2 notes, Before studio feedback, or Workshop Mar 12. The label is what future you searches for in version history.

_Name the why — not a version number_

5. [Find save points in version history](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-5)

Open the version history sidebar on your draft line. Named save points appear as a timeline — newest first — with the labels you chose.

6. [Compare against your current draft](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-6)

Select a save point to compare against what you have now. Inkwell shows semantic changes by scene and line — not a whole-file snapshot diff.

_Scene-aware changes you can read in the room_

7. [Restore or keep writing](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/first-save-point#step-7)

Restore the save point if you want to branch from that moment, or keep writing on your current draft. Either way, the named snapshot stays in history.

_History stays — no duplicate \_FINAL files_
