# Rewrite a selection with inline edit

> Select text, describe the change, read the alternatives, and accept one in place — the quickest AI edit in Plot.

Inline edit is for a line or a paragraph: select it, say what you want, get options. It is scoped to your selection and nothing else, which is what makes it fast.

1. **Select the text**

   Select a line, a speech, or a paragraph of action. Inline edit needs a selection; with nothing selected, the same shortcut opens the command palette.

2. **Open inline edit**

   Press `⌘K` / `Ctrl+K`. A small bar appears at the selection.

3. **Say what you want**

   "Shorter." "Angrier, but she still loves him." "Make it a question." Press `Enter`.

4. **Read the alternatives**

   The bar shows the rewrite in place and offers alternatives you can step through with the arrows. Each one replaces the selection on the page as you look, so you read it in context.

5. **Accept or cancel**

   `⌘↩` / `Ctrl+Enter` keeps the version showing; `⎋` / `Esc` puts your original back. An accepted edit is ordinary text — edit it further, or undo it.

> **Note: Inline edits and your allowance**
>
> Each inline edit counts one against the day's inline-edit allowance for your plan (the numbers are on [Plans and quotas](https://www.inkwell.software/help/account/plans-and-quotas)); stepping through alternatives does not count again.
