# How to choose a Final Draft alternative

> A stay-or-switch guide for 2026: credit Arc Studio, Fade In, and WriterDuet, then decide whether named save points are the actual reason to move.

Switching, Final Draft, Workflow

“Best Final Draft alternative” is what people type when a desktop license, a filename, or a room has started to hurt. Start from the job, not a ranking.

The [switching advisor](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives) scores the jobs you mark against the same tables as the compare pages. If those jobs are already covered, it says stay.

## Start from the job, not the brand

Final Draft remains the production-office default. If your coordinator, your agency, or your lock-and-revision workflow already lives there, “alternative” is the wrong word. You need an export path, not a conversion. The [Final Draft alternative](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives/final-draft) page says that in the first screen: stay if the room mandates the native toolchain and you cannot hand off FDX or PDF from somewhere else.

Switch when the pain is versions. A folder of `_FINAL_real.fdx` files is not version control. A [save point](https://www.inkwell.software/glossary/save-point) is an immutable, named moment. A [draft line](https://www.inkwell.software/glossary/draft-line) is a parallel take that does not fork the file. Those are the primitives that make a rewrite navigable. If you do not need them, stay.

The first hour of a real switch is documented in [Switch from Final Draft without losing reads](https://www.inkwell.software/blog/switching-from-final-draft-without-losing-your-reads) and the [Final Draft migration guide](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/migrate/from-final-draft): export the revision you mean to keep, import it, name it, then rewrite.

## The four tools people actually mean

Most rooms are choosing among four products. Treat them as jobs, not a podium.

**Final Draft** is the industry PDF and the FDX the office expects. Compare it on [Inkwell vs Final Draft](https://www.inkwell.software/compare/final-draft) when the question is production lock.

**WriterDuet** is live co-writing that just works. Stay if that is the only requirement. Switch when the room needs named reads and parallel takes underneath the live cursor. The [WriterDuet alternative](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives/writerduet) and [migration](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/migrate/from-writerduet) walk that split.

**Arc Studio Pro** is the polished cloud editor rooms try after Google Docs — outline next to pages, comments, no installer. Stay if the beat board is the job and history is “good enough.” Switch when nobody can say which board version is canonical. See the [Arc Studio Pro alternative](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives/arc-studio-pro) and [Arc migration](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/migrate/from-arc-studio-pro).

**Fade In** is a one-time license: stable, cheap, Linux included, FDX that production accepts. Stay if a desktop install is the constraint and you rarely co-write. Switch when the room cannot standardize on that install. The [Fade In alternative](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives/fade-in) and [Fade In migration](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/migrate/from-fade-in) keep the license as a fallback instead of asking you to throw it away.

The fixture is the other half of the switch for writers who came here because of AI. Chat is a sidebar. A skill pass edits the structured draft so you can accept or reject a line. If you wanted a generator, this is the wrong site.

## How to use the advisor

Open the [alternatives hub](https://www.inkwell.software/alternatives). Pick the tool you already pay for. Mark only the jobs that would actually make you move — named versions, live co-writing, locked production, reviewable AI, Fountain, price, or a browser room.

If the matrix is even or ahead on those jobs, the advisor says stay.

If it says switch, do not retype the script. Export [Fountain](https://www.inkwell.software/glossary/fountain) or FDX, import in Plot, and name the landing as a save point before anyone touches a line. Export FDX or PDF when the coordinator asks. The first-hour path is the same on every migration page: export, open Plot, import, name it, hand off when asked.

That is the whole decision. A job, a stay verdict you can disagree with, and a file you can name.
